The queen was livid the next morning. Outpacing her honor guard, she barreled down on me with an accusatory look that could have skinned a werebear alive.

“What do you think Slaine told her about our meeting?” I asked Sarion.

“Nothing good,” Sarion muttered, “but the queen is shrewd. Just explain what happened and she’ll see reason as long as you watch your tongue and temper with her.”

Easier said than done. My tongue was sharpened on both ends. Somehow, I was going to have to play the docile pet, throwing myself on the queen’s mercy.

I curtseyed low in greeting as she approached, but the queen didn’t slow her pace. “I heard you’re refusing to answer General Slaine’s questions. He claims you’re hiding something about your relationship with the Dark Wolf God. What is it?”

The reek of Slaine’s breath and the feel of him pressing me against the door shot through my mind, shattering any pretense of patience I had. “Your general is an animal. Put him on a leash.”

Her face flushed with anger. “He’s a tool for rooting out traitors and spies.”

Although the power of her presence was withering, I held my ground. “I refuse to be treated like either. Did Slaine mention I walked him through every corner of Shadowstone? Or that I gave endless details on the Dark Wolf God’s inner council and his forces?”

“He said you provided some information that will need to be corroborated.”

“Some information? He held me captive for three hours, grilling me nonstop like I was a prisoner of war.”

The queen frowned, but I sensed the faintest softening of her position. “Slaine said you were holding back about the nature of your relationship with the Dark Wolf God.”

I couldn’t hide the disgust that crossed my face, and I lowered my voice to a deadly whisper. “You mean when he asked how it felt to have the Dark God beat me? Whether or not he pinned me down and fucked me? I’m no longer a captive, and I will not relive that nightmare.”

The queen hesitated a fraction of a second. “Whatever Slaine asked, he had reason.”

I could almost smell the scent of his arousal again, and it made my stomach churn. “The reason is that suffering gets him off.”

“Watch yourself, girl,” the queen snapped. “General Slaine is of the fifth order and my trusted advisor.”

I knotted my fists as my wolf surged in my chest. “Then you should know exactly who he is.”

Her expression didn’t waver, but her scent told me what I needed to know: she knew he was a sadist, and it revolted her. That was all I needed, a fragment of sympathy. I just had to widen the fracture into a crack.

I dropped my eyes. “Your Majesty, I’ve told you that I’m here to help, and the information I shared I gave gladly. But the general pinned the door shut and told me he could fuck and beat me better than the Dark God could himself. That kind of treatment is not what I agreed to when you invited me here.
